Purpose

Bluford Unit School District 318 recognizes that parent and family engagement is essential to student academic achievement, social-emotional growth, and overall school success. This policy outlines our commitment to building strong partnerships with parents and families to create a supportive, inclusive, and collaborative educational environment.

Definition of Parent and Family Engagement

Parent and family engagement refers to the active participation of parents, guardians, and family members in the education of their students through open communication, involvement in school activities, and collaboration with educators to support student learning and development.

Policy Goals

  1. Foster open, two-way communication between the school and families.

  2. Encourage family participation in school programs, decision-making, and activities.

  3. Provide resources and opportunities for families to support student academic and social success.

  4. Build capacity for parents, families, and staff to work together effectively.

  5. Ensure equitable access to engagement opportunities for all families, including those with diverse linguistic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Key Components of the Policy

  1. Communication

○     Regular Updates: The school will provide timely information about school programs, policies, and student progress through newsletters, emails, the school website, and parent portals.

○     Parent Meetings: Conferences will be held at the parent/guardian request during after school hours or during teacher planning periods. Flexible scheduling, including virtual options, will be used to accommodate family needs.

○     Language Accessibility: Communications will be provided in families’ preferred languages whenever possible, with translation and interpretation services available.

○     Feedback Opportunities: Families are encouraged to share feedback through surveys, or direct communication with school staff.

○     School Events: Families are invited to participate in events such as Freshman Orientation, open house night, course exploration night, and any extracurricular activities (e.g., sports, arts, or academic showcases).
