About the Teacher

It has been such an enriching experience to teach here at BGS!  I have lived in the Southern Illinois area my whole life so after graduating from Eastern Illinois University in 1998, I was thrilled to be hired at Bluford Grade School for a third grade position. I taught third grade for five years, sixth grade for six years, and now I'm teaching fourth grade.

I am so excited to begin my new role as a fourth grade teacher. Two of my favorite subjects to teach are reading and social studies.  I hope that this year my love of those subjects will help students get excited about them, too!

Throughout the school year, the students will find that I share lots of stories about myself as examples.  These will range from my interest in gardening, reading, and football, to my involvement at church, to the antics of my daughter and son, all the way to "when I was younger" lectures.  I want the students to know that every little experience can have a positive impact on their life if they choose to make it so.

If you need to contact me, you may email me at msherwin@blufordschools.org.  If it is about a very important issue please call me during school hours.  The school's phone number is 732-8242.  If I am unable to talk at that moment, I will return your call as soon as possible.

A Little More about Me:

Favorite Foods:  Chocolate, Crab Legs, Eggplant parmesan, Lasagna, Coffee, Hot Tea

Favorite Books:  It's very hard to choose, but my top 5 are the Anne of Green Gables series by L.M. Montgomery, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, Emma  by Jane Austen, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis, and The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Emmuska Orczy.

Favorite Season:  Fall- I love the gorgeous fall weather and the colors that come with it.  It is so much fun to go to fall events like craft fairs and festivals.   I love the excitement of a new football season beginning.  Of course,  I always look forward to a new school year and what it will bring!

Something strange that has happened to me at school:  Once, when I was still teaching third grade, I had my back to the window.  When I turned around to face the window, there was a big, black hairy head looking in the window!  It took me by surprise so I  shouted out and startled all of the students.  A stray dog had been walking by and decided to put it's paws on the window ledge and look in.  It's big hairy head looked like a bear!  After it had satisfied its curiosity, it jumped down and trotted off.  We all had a great big laugh about that.
