Native Americans

November is Native American Heritage month.  In honor of this, we spent some time learning about the history of the Native Americans.  In reading, we read "Native Americans" by Robert Coupe.  In Social Studies, we learned about the six cultural areas of the Native Americans.   Each student was given a cultural area to research.   We completed a map of the cultural areas and made animal skin reports.

Check out our animal skin reports!

We learned about symmetry in math class.  Then we made Native American masks using various shapes.
Our goal was to make both sides symmetrical.  We loved this activity.

We also ended our unit by making the shelters the Native Americans lived in and then we got to eat them!

After reading the book The Legend of the Bluebonnet, by Tomie dePaola, we created our own thankful shields.  We wrote about people we are thankful for, placed our writing on one side of our shield and then placed pictures on the other side.
